REALTOR® Code of Ethics
The REALTOR® Association is governed by a document entitled the Code of Ethics. The code was originally drafted in 1913 as a result of unethical practices driving down the public’s trust of real estate agents. This document set a higher standard of professional behavior amongst REALTORS® in their dealings with the public, with clients and with fellow REALTORS®. This code was the predecessor to today’s real estate license laws, as laws governing real estate did not exist at the time it was created. The code is a living and breathing document, having been amended over fifty times since its inception, and so far once annually since 1986.

By joining NSBAR, REALTOR® members agree to conduct their business according to the mandates set out in the Code of Ethics. It is an agreement between REALTOR® members and the overall association, by which your membership mandates members to live and practice according to its doctrine.
